Biography

Alex Hemrick served in the United States Civil War.

  • Alex was born in 1846 in Jackson County, Georgia. He was the son of John M Hemrick and Mary Elizabeth Buchanan .[1]
  • In 1850, John was four years old and living in Jackson, Georgia with parents and nine siblings.[2]
  • In 1860, Alex was fourteen and living with his family in Clarke County, Georgia.[3]

  • He enlisted in Lumpkin's Artillery Company with his brother Charles, when they came of age and both served as privates until the end of the war. [4]
  • Shortly after returning home at the end of the war, he married Irena Wigley. They had five children.
  • After the war, he was fanatically partisan about the south and refused to take the oath of allegiance to the United States. He had no citizenship or franchise until general amnesty was granted all CSA veterans. [5]
  • In 1882 Alex and his family were living in Clarke County, Georgia. His application for tax relief which was dated 1 Feb 1882 was filed in Clarke County. The law at that time was granted to heads of families with minor children. This is described in detail in the Jarvis book.[6]
  • He passed away on 08 May 1895 in Bogart, Oconee, Georgia. He is buried in the Bogart United Methodist Church. [7]
