Biography

DANIEL HENCHMAN, married first to Sarah Woodward[1][2] before 1657[3] in England.[3]

Daniel and Sarah (Woodward) Henchman had the following children:

  1. Hannah (not in Richardson, proven to be their daughter, see below)
  2. Richard,
  3. Hezekiah,
  4. Nathaniel,
  5. William,
  6. Susanna, m. to (1) Samuel Collins, Jr. (2) John Harris.

Hannah, wife of William Sumner[1] and John Hall (see the full research notes in her profile). is the daughter of Daniel Henchman as per a Suffolk County, MA deed record from 17 November 1700. From the Suffolk Deeds of Massachusetts, vol. 20, page 70: "said land of a greater parcel purchased by Daniel Henchman dec'sd of Austin Lindon, given to the said Hannah Sumner & Susanna Collins (said Henchman's daughters)[4]

Daniel's origins are uncertain at this time. He may be the son of Richard Henchman and Anna Hannah Newberry of London, England, and might have been born (or baptized) on 28 Apr 1623[5] perhaps in Westminster, London, England, however, no vital records have been found to substantiate this claim.

Daniel and his family immigrated to New England about 1666 and settled in Boston, Massachusetts where, on 15 Oct 1669, Daniel and Sarah Henchman signed a deed.[3]

After his arrival in New England, Daniel taught school at the Boston Latin School[3] and was captain of the artillery company in Boston.[5]

Daniel Henchman is known as one of the founders of Quinsigamond (later renamed Worcester), in western Massachusetts. He was a member of a 1667 committee established by the General Court in Boston to lay out a new plantation there and was the chief manager of the settlement, having received the largest number of acres in the first division of lands[3] (25 acres).[5] He was a freeman in 1672,[3] appearing on a list of freemen in Boston dated 15 May 1672.[6]

Sarah Henchman died sometime between 1669-1672. Daniel and Mary Pole or Poole, daughter of William Pole/Poole, were married on 26 Apr 1672 in Dorchester[2][3] or Boston, Massachusetts by Mr. Stoughton.[7] They had the following children:[3]

  1. William;
  2. Daniel;
  3. Jane, m. Varney;
  4. Mary.

At the start of King Philips War in 1675, Daniel Henchman was appointed Captain of the 5th Boston Company, Colonial Militia.[3] He also led Boston’s First Company of Infantry at Pocasset, where they built a garrison. That company later served at Mendon, Rehoboth, Mount Hope, and in the Narragansett and Nipmuck Countries.[5] After his service in King Philips War, he returned to Worcester, managed the settlement[5] and, in 1684, formed a plan for the re-settlement of the town.[3]

In Feb 1676, the sons of Daniel and Sarah Henchman, Hezekiah, "aged 19 and upward", and Nathaniel, "aged 15 and upward", appeared in court and chose their father, Daniel, to be their guardian with respect to their inheritance from their grandfather, Hezekiah Woodward. The court approved the request and appointed Daniel as guardian of Susanna Henchman, aged 9 years, as well.[8]

Daniel Henchman died on 15 Oct 1685[5] in Worcester, Massachusetts,[3] intestate.[9] He was likely buried at the Henchman Farm, the original 25 acre property he received at Worcester's settlement. Later, the City of Worcester named Henchman Street in his honor.[10]
