Biography

Turpie Wilson Henderson was born in 1861 to Scottish immigrants James Henderson and Euphemia Wilson; her (very unusual) first name honours the maiden surname of her maternal grandmother.

She married John Blair in 1882 in Victoria, Australia, and with him had four children :

Before 1909 Turpie Blair had owned and run a hotel, the Lake Bank Hotel in Lara; in that year she agreed to voluntarily surrender her licence, for which she received £200 compensation. She died in 1948, aged about 83 years.

• TROVE (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/150688494/17795214); Citing : Geelong Advertiser (Vic. : 1859 - 1929) Wed 22 Dec 1909 Page 2 “LAKE BANK HOTEL, LARA : In making their compensation awards to the owner and licensee of the Lake Bank Hotel, Lara, which has been voluntarily delicensed, the Licenses Reduction Board made the following observations:—"The claims of the owner and licensee of this hotel were heard at Geelong last week. As regards the owner the position is that the hotel is very old, and if it had continued as a licensed house, very extensive repairs would have been necessary, estimated by the architect and one of the valuers called at £200, though the other valuer thought that a considerably less sum would have been sufficient. The board's inspector tends to confirm the former estimate. On the other hand the rent received was rather on the low side, having regard to the business done. The licensee's case was presented with full details of the trade for the past two or three years, which seems to have been a fairly substantial one. The returns for the statutory period of 1903-5 were very incomplete owing to the death of one of the then licensees and the absence of the other. Moreover, there was the doubt as to the continuance of the tenancy and renewal of the license owing to the condition of the building. Under all the circumstances the board, considers that fair compensation will be: - To the owner (Mrs. Turpie Wilson Blair) £200; to the licensee (Hugh Berry) £90, total £290. These amounts will payable on the expiry of the statutory period of notice, viz., six weeks, at the Geelong branch of the Treasury. Mr H. A. Harwood conducted the case for both parties before the board on the 16th inst.”
