Biography

James was born at Shaws Farm in the parish of Dalserf, Lanarkshire on 30th August 1824 and was baptised there on 21st September 1824. He was the son of James Henderson and Lilias Burns. [1]

In 1841 James was 15 years old. He lived at Shaws farm in the parish of Dalserf with his parents, siblings William, John, James, Margaret, and Thomas and three servants, Grace Wen, Betsy Stark and John Lindsay. [2]

In 1851 James was 26 years old. He lived at Shaws farm in the parish of Dalserf with his parents, siblings John, James, Margaret, Thomas and servant, Mary Pate. [3]

There is an entry in the Carluke Kirk Session minutes for 16th December 1849 which refers to ' - James Hamilton residing at Brownlee whose case had been remitted from the Presbytery to the Session to be dealt with by them as they considered best for edification. The instructions of the Presbytery being implemented he was rebuked and absolved of the scandal of his offence and restored to Church privileges.'[4] There is nothing in either the Kirk Session or Presbytery records to indicate what this offence might have been.

On 5th June 1853, James married Margaret Stewart in Carluke, Lanarkshire. [5]

Children

In 1861 James was 36 years old, a farmer of 260 acres employing 4 men and 5 women. He lived with his wife Margaret and children James, Sarah and Lilias at Hyndshaw Farm, Carluke. [6]

In 1871 James was 46 years old, a farmer of 290 acres employing 6 men. He lived with his wife Margaret and children James, Annie and Margaret at Hyndshaw Farm, Carluke. [7]

Margaret died in in Carluke, Lanarkshire in 1881, before the Census was taken on 3rd April. [8]

In 1881 James was 56 years old, a farmer of 291 acres of arable land. He lived with his children Annie, Margaret and William at Hyndshaw Farm, Carluke. [9]

James died on 19th June 1887 at Victoria Cottage, Carluke. His death from heart diesease, dropsy and congestion of the lungs was registered by his son James who gave his address as Selms, Kirknewton. [10]
