Biography
John was born in 1846... John Henderson, in Dundee, Scotland son of James Henderson and Annie McDonald .
The Scotland Census of 1851 shows John's birth place at Forfar, County Forfarshire Angus, age 5, estimated birth year 1846.
The 1861 Census shows John still living at the same residence as in 1851 and he is aged 15 years and living with his father James Henderson .
John emigrated to Australia and in 1870 married Charlotte (May) Furlong. Charlotte was a widow, she had two sons from her first marriage, George Frederick Furlong and Ernest James Furlong.
John passed away in 1881.
The circumstances of his untimely death called for a Coroner's Inquest which concluded that John was accidentally killed on the railway line at Mittagong.
John's grave is situated at the Rowe's Hill Cemetery,Old South Road, Mittagong.
On entering the cemetery the grave is located in the left hand corner nearest the road.
John Gavin Henderson's death certificate states that he died August 13, 1881 whereas the headstone on his grave says December 31 1881.
Research Notes
Members of the Historical Society at Mittagong told us that headstone dates are not necessarily correct. Stones were often erected many years later. It reads... Sacred to the memory of John Henderson. Native of Dundee, Scotland Who died Dec 31st 1881 aged 35 years. By a sudden death he was cut off He could no longer stay Because it was the Saviour's will To call him hence away. J.H. 1881". [1]
