Chris Wrigleys Biography of Arthur Henderson outlines two possible details of Arthur's parentage and birth as the precise details are not known.
First version is that Arthur was born on the 13 Sept 1863 in the New City Road Glasgow. His father was David Henderson, who died when Arthur was young. Arthurs mum remarried a man called Robert Heath and the family moved to Newcastle upon Tyne.
Second version is that Arthur was born on the 20 Sept 1863 Paterson Street, Anderson, Glasgow. His mother was a Agnes Henderson a domestic servant and unmarried. Agnes and her children moved to Newcastle upon Tyne and Agnes married Robert Heath there on the 9 May 1874.
Wrigley points out the disdain for illegitimacy amongst certain quarters & scurrilous use of such information at the time so Arthur Henderson had no reason to make such information available even after his mothers death.
