Anna Maria was baptized on August 26, 1804, in Széleskút, Sopron, a part of the newly formed Austrian Empire (Széleskút, Sopron, Magyarország), which is now Breitenbrunn am Neusiedler See in the district of Eisenstadt within the state of Burgenland, Austria. Her parents were Joseph Handler (abt.1780-abt.1855) and Anna (Gleitheit) Handler (abt.1780-abt.1855) and the midwife or godparent was Anna Maria Seifried.[1] In 1831 Anna Maria (Handler) had an illegitimate son, Joseph (Hendler) Schweger (abt.1831-abt.1900).[2] Seven months later, on May 31 of 1832, Anna Maria was married to Gregor Schweger (1807-1898) in Széleskút.[3][4] Their witnesses included Johannes Nepomuk Schweger (abt.1814-abt.1885), Simon Zügel, Mathias Pagel, and her brother György Handler (abt.1822-1903).[3]It is possible that Gregor was the father of her son Joseph and that they married after his birth. Gregor and Anna Maria had another eight children: Mathias Schweger (1833-abt.1905)[5] Magdalena Schweger (abt.1834-1834)[6] Maria Schweger (abt.1835-abt.1923)[7] Rudolph Schweger (abt.1838-1839)[8] Theresia Schweger (abt.1839-aft.1860)[9] Herman Armenius Schweger (1842-1904)[10][11] Magdolna Schweger (abt.1844-aft.1860)[12] Rupert Schweger (1845-1902)[13][14].

The above baptismal records show that between 1834 and 1842, Anna Maria's husband ran a small farm, so Anna Maria would have been a farmer's wife. The last two children's records show that he was a cottager or landless peasant (zseller).

In 1857 Anna Maria and Gregor, along with four of their children and her brother George's family, emigrated to Wisconsin, USA, where her brother Anton had already moved. They sailed out of Bremen, Germany to Baltimore, Maryland on the Ernst Moritz Arndt, arriving July 10, 1857.[15]

The family settled in Menasha, Wisconsin. Their first American census in 1860 records four children living with Gregor and his wife "Marie", Mary, Theresa, Herman and Robert (likely a mistranscription or Anglicization of Rupert.) Gregor is listed as a laborer.[16] Ten years later Anna Maria and Gregor were still living in Menasha, but with no children at home. As the census shows them having $300 in real estate they must have been able to purchase their home.[17]

No death records have been found for Anna Maria, but a marriage record for Gregor occurs in 1874, so she must have died between 1870 and 1874, most likely in Menasha, Wisconsin.

Research Notes

  • There are two towns called Széleskút. The marriage record for Anna Maria and the birth records for her children show that they were living in the town differentiated as FertöSzéleskút, meaning it is on the lake of Neusiedler or Fertö tó in Hungarian.
  • No death record has been found for Anna Maria, but various family trees on Ancestry and Family Search list both Menasha and Manitowoc, Wisconsin. She had been living in Menasha and her husband continued to live in Menasha after her death so I think this location is most likely. However it doesn't rule out her death while visiting elsewhere.Schweger-2 18:05, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
