Biography

William Hendrix III was part of a Southern Pioneer Family.

William Hendricks III was born on 25 Aug 1793 in Duncan Spartanburg County South Carolina, the son of William Hendrix II and Sarah (Unknown) Hendrix. He was the brother of Elisha Berry Hendricks.

William married Charity Wood around 1813 in Spartanburg District, South Carolina. They had the following children:

  1. Elizabeth Hendrix Hughs
  2. William Wiley Hendrix, CSA POW, died in service
  3. Elisha Berry Hendrix, CSA
  4. Henry Basco Hendrix, CSA POW, died in service
  5. Thomas M. Hendrix, CSA POW, died in service
  6. Sarah Martha Hendricks
  7. Mary Hendricks

Three of William's sons were captured at the Battle of the Crater and died as POWs while at Elmira. They were not able to bring any of them home to bury.

William died on 31 Mar 1876 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, at age 82. He was buried after 31 Mar 1876 in Wood's Chapel, Greer, Spartanburg, South Carolina.[1]
