Biography

Lott Tallent seems to have been a recruiting officer in the Revolution, judging from a report made to Governor Casewell by six men concering certain other men selected for drafting as soldiers. Lott Tallent's name was the first of the six signatures to the report. This report was followed by many letters opposing the draft, strongly abusing the committee of six men, and very abusive of Lott Tallent. It was dated 6 June 1778. He was later taken prisoner by Tyron. A book written by a reporter of the Chattanooga, Tn., Newspaper, about the ancestors of Hamilton Co., Tn., gives the following exerpts: "Lott Tallent, who was born in 1752, married Sarah S. Lindsay in 1773. When Anson County was seeking to meet the required quota of volunteers for the Continental Army, Lott Tallent, was one of the officials conducting the election. He was among those joining the company headed by Capt. Wilson. In the spring of 1781, Lott Tallent, and 27 other members of the Wilson unit were captured by the British and Tories, taken to Cumberland County, and 'delivered to Edward Tramming's henchmen". They were carried to Wilmington and placed on board a British prison ship. Nearly all of the prisoners, including Tallent contracted smallpox and died on the ship. Sarah Lindsay Tallent later married her late husband's brother Moses Tallant. He helped her raise her sons by the first marriage.

According to a 4/10/66 letter written by Ora Tallen, Ava, MO, Lot Tallent Sr was an Enrolling Officer for the Colonies and was captured and died of small pox on a British prison ship in 1781. Body lost or destroyed.
