The family arrived in Dunedin, New Zealand on 22 February 1860 aboard the Gala. Robert had a wife, two sons and six daughters. ^[2] He farmed at Hakataramea Downs for a time before moving to Waimate, Canterbury. ^[3]

He passed away 11 September 1903 at his residence in Waimate, where he had farmed for about 30 years. He left a very ill wife. ^[3]
