Biography

Jane Hendy was born in 1826 in Bath, Somerset, England, United Kingdom. She was the daughter of James Hendy, Brewer, and Charlotte Hunt.

In the 1841 census Jane (age 15) was in Freshwater, Hampshire, England working as a farm servant.^[1]

Jane married George Rugg on 19 August 1849 in St Matthew, Bethnal Green, Tower Hamlets, England.^[2]

In the 1851 census Jane (age 23) was living with her husband George Rugg and their 4 month old son George in Stratford le Bow, Middlesex, England.^[3]

Jane Rugg, widow, married William Alden on January 4, 1857, in St John of Jerusalem, South Hackney, Hackney, England.^[4] Together they had 4 children.

3. Albert John Alden (1863–1951)
4. Isaac James Alden (1865–1947)

In the 1861 census Jane (age 33) was living with her husband William (age 29) and their first son William (age 3) at their home at No. 12 Ford Road in Bow, Middlesex, England.^[5] Which may have been very close to where her parents had lived on Ford Street in 1851.^[6]

She died on July 27, 1867 in Ford Road, Old Ford, Bow, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom. She was buried on 31 July 1867 in London, England.^[7]

Research Notes

• some family trees record her mother as Fanny Hendy, due to a christening record in 1826 in Southampton. However, Fanny appears to have been a single woman, and she indicates in both of her marriage records that her father was James Hendy, brewer. The above attached christening record matches this information
• there was some confusion about her location of birth based on census records. She indicates Somerset in 1841 and 1851. But in 1861 it was Hampshire, which may have been an error since her husbands place of birth was also listed Hampshire (her's simply says "do")
• marriage records indicated that she didn't write, and may not have been able to read, so it's possible she wouldn't have noticed this error during the census
