Notables Project
Andrew Henley MP is Notable.

Andrew Henley was the eldest son of Robert Henley of Henley, Somerset and Soper Lane, London, chief clerk of K.b. from 1629 until 1642, by his second wife, Anne Eldred, [1][2]daughter of John Eldred of Saxmundham, Suffolk.[3] He was baptised at St Michael Bassishaw on the 7th of May. [4] Andrew was educated at Middle Temple and Exeter College, Oxford.[3]

Sometime after 1648, he married Mary Gayer, daughter of Sir John Gayer, [1][2]merchant and Fishmonger and Lord Mayor of London and his wife, Catherine Hopkins. [5] [3]Together they had 2 sons and 2 daughters. [3][1]He succeeded his father in 1656.[3]

Andrew was returned to Parliament as member for Portsmouth on 8 May 1660 [3][2]and was a member when Parliament welcomed the restoration of Charles II. He was created Baronet on 20 June 1660. [3]He was knighted on the 21st of July. [6] His wife, Mary, died on 30 July 1666. [3]

On 29 November 1666 Samuel Pepys wrote "And to show how mad we are at home and unfit for any troubles: my Lord St John did, a day or two since, openly pull a gentleman in Westminster Hall by the nose, one Sir Andrew Henley, while the judges were upon their benches, and the other gentleman did give him a rap over the pate with his cane, of which fray the Judges, they say, will make a great matter: men are only sorry the gentleman did proceed to return a blow; for, otherwise, my Lord would have been soundly fined for the affront, and may be yet for his affront to the Judges." [7]

It wasn't until 20 May 1672 that Andrew remarried. His second wife was Constance Bromfield, daughter of Thomas Bromfield, merchant and Haberdasher, of Coleman Street, London, and widow of Thomas Middleton of Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex. There were no children from this marriage. [3]

He died on 17 May 1675, and was buried at Eversley.[3] His will may be found here.
