Biography

William Lewis Henning of Frome Whitfield, Dorset J.P., Mayor of Dorchester in 1840, was born on 27th May 1794 and baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Dorchester on 8th December 1795.^[1] He was the son of William Henning and Sarah Lewis.

He married Ann Rose only daughter and heiress of Robert Shurock of Snowdenham Bramley in Surrey on 23 June 1825.^[2][3] Together they had the following children:-

• Marchia Rose born in Surrey on 27th March 1826 baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Dorchester on 21 Aug 1827.^[4] She married Tavena Miller or Portland Place in London^[3]
• Emily baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Dorchester 27th January 1828 and buried 31st March 1828 aged 11 weeks^[5][3]
• Shurlock Henning C.B. J.P. (1829-1898) also of Frome Whitefield late of the 88th, 26th and 38th Regiments of served in the Crimean War and was present at Alma and Sebastopol, served in the Indian Mutiny, present at Cawmpore, Calpee, and Lucknow, and commanded the 26th Foot in the Abyssinian expedition of 1868, mentioned in despatches. He was born 24th April and baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Dorchester on 5th May 1829.^[6] He married 21st June 1864 to Frances Amelia PEDLAR daughter of Colonel Philip Warren Pedlar J.P. of Brunswick Sq Brighton. He died 1st Sep 1898 leaving an estate of £6,939^[3]
• Eliza Ann born 7th December & baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Dorchester 21st December 1830,^[7] she married John William Hallward at Holy Trinity Church, Dorchester on 15th Dec 1859^[3]
• William Walter baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Dorchester 2nd March 1832,^[8] educated at Eton, matriculated Oriel College Oxford 19th June 1851 aged 19 of Wood Hill Shamley Green Guildford Surrey J.P.^[3]
• Sarah Sophia born 29th September and baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Dorchester 28th October 1837,^[9] she married John Griffiths at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 10th Sep 1857^[3]

William died on 30th June 1876 at Weymouth^[10] leaving a will with a codicil. Described as formerly of Froome Whitfield in Dorchester but late of Weymouth his will was proved at the Principal Registry by Shurlock Henning his son of Froome Whitfield Colonel Commanding Her Majestys 38th Regt leaving an estate of under £2,000.^[3]
