In 1872 24 yr. old John married 17 yr. old Isabella Hastings in Turnberry, Huron, Ontario, Canada.[3] In 1873 they moved to a homestead claim in Enoch, Antrim, Michigan, US. John developed an eighty acre farm in Echo, Antrim, Michigan, of which sixty acres was cultivated. The land had to be cleared first of heavy timber. They grew wheat, oats and hay and had an orchard for apples and other fruits. John had twenty head of cattle and a considerable amount of Poland China Swine. John helped with the early laying out of highways in the area. He was involved in community interests, not just his alone. He served four years as a justice of the peace of Echo township, was a member of the school board about 25 yrs. and was township treasurer for eighteen years. John supported the Republican party at the federal and state level but was non-partisan at the local level. At home, they had thirteen children, of which nine were living.[4][5][6][7][8]
John passed away about the age of 73 yrs. in E Jordan, Charlevoix, Michigan, US.[9][10]
