Biography

JOSEPH HENRY is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 6-L, Le Bon Papa, arrive le 29 juillet 1785. Listed with him are his wife, Cecille Braud, and children Jean Laurent, Joseph, Pierre, Marie Josephe, Anne Francoise, and Magdelene Apolline.[1]

Joseph Henry was born around 1743 in Cobequid, Acadia, Nova Scotia Colony, a son of Francois Henry (c.1716 - c.1758) and Marie Dugas (c.1722 - 1764).

His known siblings were:

  1. Basile Henry (1741 - 1799)
  2. Elisabeth Henry (1748 - <1792)
Around 1751, his parents François and Marie decided to settle on Ile Saint-Jean (now Prince Edward Island), in search of a better life. In 1752 they appeared on the detailed La Roque census in Grande Ascension, Ile Saint-Jean, with two sons and three daughters. Joseph was listed at 9 years of age. [2]

The family did not escape deportation. They were among the 1033 Acadians who were put aboard five British ships that left Acadie in the fall of 1758, destined for France. Of the 1033 passengers listed, 339 died at sea, and 156 died not long after arriving in France. His father Francois and his three youngest siblings died about 1758 at sea during the crossing to France. Joseph, his mother, and his siblings Basile (with his wife), Anne Marguerite Josèphe and Elisabeth, disembarked at St. Malo on 23 Jan 1759. [3] The family resided at St. Suliac 1759-1761, until his mother's remarriage to Antoine Braud (see family #194).[4]
Joseph married his step-sibling Marie Cecile Breau , daughter of Antoine Breau and Cécile Bourg, on 15 May 1764 in Saint-Suliac, Bretagne (now Ille-et-Vilaine), France. [5] The witnesses were Antoine Breau, Emilian Segoillot, Jean Breau, Mathurin Bourg who signed.

In 1772 they were recorded on a census at St. Malo, France, with sons Jean-Laurent and Joseph-Julien. [7]

In September 1784, Joseph and Cécile, and their six children (three sons, three daughters), appeared on a list of Acadians in Nantes, France who wished to immigrate to Louisiana.[8]
In May 1785, the family of eight boarded the ship Le Bon Papa, bound for Louisiana. They disembarked at the port of New Orleans on 29 July 1785.[9]
Joseph died in Aug 1821 in Saint Gabriel, Louisiana, United States, aged about 76. [10]

    Victoire, aged 16 months
    And in stock, three oxen, two cows, four heifers, three ewes, one sow, three pigs and ten fowls. The land on which they are settled is situated as in the preceding cases. It was given to them verbally by Monsieur de Bonnaventure. On it they have made a clearing for the sowing of two bushels of wheat in the coming spring.
