Biography

From the research notes of Nathaniel Henry - great grandson of John C.A. Henry:

JOHN C. ALEXANDER HENRY was born Jan 11, 1835 in Alabama19,20, and died Jul 11,1892. He married LAVINIA CAROLINE GARRETT, daughter of MATHEW GARRETT and NANCY MEACHAM. She was born May 12, 1832 in Tennessee and died Jan 18, 1894 . Notes for JOHN C. ALEXANDER HENRY:

Known as "Alex"

From Mattie Greenhill Rikard King- Alex Henry first lived on the "Alex Woodruff" place. This was down the hill, (south) just past the county line, from the old JCA Henry homeplace in Rock Creek. At the bottom of the hill, turn left toward Frankfort. (Present county road 84). Gilbert Taylor's son now lives there in recently constructed house. 11/25/2002 His farm in Rock Creek consisted of two parcels- one of six acres and one of twelve and one-fourth acres. Family traditon has it that this is where the family lived while he was in the cavalry during the war. The first note in the abstract however, of his owning this land, shows that on Dec 1, 1881 he placed a mortgage on the property. The hill just to the north of the old home location is known as the Jim hill. The story is that he was heard calling out to the family as he came up this hill as he came home at the end of the war (unverified). He joined the Rock Creek Church of Christ on July 6, 1873. Mary Hazel Henry Malone lists his death as Aug 1, 1892. This is what his replacement CSA stone shows. His original tombstone, handcarved, listed July 11, 1892. William R Henry's Bible shows Aug 1, 1892. This maybe was the basis for the date put on his present military marker as I believe David Leroy Henry Sr., a son of William R Henry, and who at one time had the WRH Bible, placed the stone.

JCA Henry first appears in the 1850 census, Giles Co., TN. as a son of Franklin Henry, at age 15.
