Biography

Mary Henry was born in 1837 at Tandragee, County Armagh, Ireland. She was the daughter of James Henry and Jane Cousins. [1]/

On October 21 1841, the Manlius sailed from Greenock, Scotland with 245 passengers. It arrived in Port Phillip on Monday, February 10, 1842. During the voyage, 61 of the passengers and crew had died from Typhus. Other deaths occurred in quarantine at Point Gellibrand, Williamstown.[2] The Henry family were passengers on this "plague ship", and the Henry children lost their father during this voyage, and their mother in quarantine at Point Gellibrand. The children survived both the voyage and quarrantine. Mary was 4 years old. When the five orphaned children were finally released from quarantine in late April they were collected by their late mother’s sister, Margaret Black, and taken to Carraragarmungee, a 60,000 acre property near Wangaratta held under licence by Mrs Agnes Reid and her sons David and John. Andrew Black worked on the property as a shepherd and wagon driver. The early life of the five children was spent on this property.[3]

Mary Henry married David Bell in 1854, at Victoria.
