Biography

On Sept. 13, 1843 (1901 Census), James was born in Sandhill, Peel County, Ontario. His birthplace was recorded in his obituary below.

He was educated by Dr. Howe, principal of the Toronto Grammar School. In 1861, during the Trent Affair between Britain and the United States, he was vetted as an ensign in the 100th Militia Regiment.

In 1863, he graduated from the University of Toronto with an M.B. and in 1864, with an M.D., and began his career as a physician in Orangeville.

The September 3, 1863, Canada Gazette, The Sun, published the card of James Henry, Physician and Surgeon, of Mono Mills.

The October 29, 1863, Canada Gazette, The Sun, reported that Dr. James Henry on Mono Mills had been appointed the Associate Coroner of York and Peel Counties.

In 1867 (Reg. 21107), James married Esther Graham who was born Aug. 5, 1842 (1901 Census) in Amaranth Twp., Dufferin County to James Graham. Her son Thomas’ death registration gave her place of birth. James Graham was a resident of Orangeville at the time of the marriage. An Esther Graham was reported in Amaranth Twp. in the 1851 Census and in Mono Twp., Simcoe County in the 1861 Census.

On July 1, 1868 (Death Reg.), Thomas Herbert Henry was born in Orangeville.

About 1869 (1871 Census), Louisa Henry was born. Louisa was not found in the 1811 Census. Had she died or was she Florence Louisa believed to have been born in 1871?

The 1871 Census for Orangeville recorded James Henry, 27, a physician, Esther, 26, Thomas H., 3, and Louisa, 2. All were born in Ontario and belonged to the Church of Scotland.

On November 3, 1871, Florence Louisa J. Henry was born in Orangeville.

The 1871-1872 Gazette and Directory of the County of Wellington recorded James Henry as an M.D. and coroner in Orangeville.

On Nov. 27, 1874, Walter Douglas Henry was born in Orangeville.

On Aug. 22, 1876 (1901 Census), James Clarence Henry was born in Orangeville.

On Aug. 22, 1875 (find-a-grave.com), John Zimmerman Henry was born in Orangeville.

On Dec. 17, 1878, Victoria Jane Henry was born in Orangeville (Marriage Reg.).

On Oct. 31, 1880 (Reg. 901505), Oscar Bertram Henry was born in Orangeville. Oscar made the declaration of his birth date on March 8, 1944. As his parents were both dead at the time, his declaration was certified by his brother James C. Henry who was present at his birth. J.S. Henry was probably his brother.

The 1881 Census, Orangeville, recorded James, 35, an M.D., Esther, 39, Thomas Herbert, 12, Florance L., 11, James C., 8, Walter D., 6, John Z., 4, Jane, 2, and Osar B., 1, all born in Ontario.

On Apr. 6, 1883 (Reg. 901497), Charles Edmund Henry was born in Orangeville. The declaration of birth date was made on April 20, 1934. The declaration was certified by Walter Douglas Henry.

The 1901 Census, Orangeville, recorded the family as James, 57, Esther, 58, Walter D., born Nov 20, 26, James C., born Aug 22, 1876, 24, Victoria J., born Dec 19, 22, and Charles H., all Church of England, living in a 9-room brick house on First Ave.

The 1911 Census, Orangeville, recorded James, 68, a physician, and Esther, 69. Both were born in Ontario, Anglican, and lived on First Avenue.

On Oct. 30, 1916, James died in Orangeville at 74 of a paralytic stroke and was buried there in Forest Lawn Cemetery. [1]

The Canadian Medical Association Journal reported that James had practiced medicine in Orangeville for 53 years. He was a member of the Ontario Medical Council for 25 (or 30) years and was at times a surgeon with the 36th Peel Battalion. He retired from the militia regiment with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He had been a coroner for the counties of Dufferin, Grey, Peel, and Wellington. He had been mayor of Orangeville on 5 occasions.

He had been a personal friend of Sir John A. MacDonald.

On Nov. 14, 1917, Esther Graham Henry died and was buried with James. Her obituary recorded her children as Mrs. George Jackson of Orangeville, Mrs. A.L.C. Kirkwood of Toronto, Dr. Thomas H., Jack Z., and Charles E. of Orangeville, O.B. of Toronto, W.D. of Markdale, and James H. of Brandon, Manitoba. [2]
