Biography

On Dec. 29, 1848 (1901 Census), Samuel was born in Sandhill, Chinguacousy Twp., Peel County, Ontario.

In 1868, Samuel graduated from Victoria University and began his practice in Harriston, where he remained until 1916. This report was found in his obituary in the Canadian Practitioner and Review, Volume 47, 1922.

On June 19, 1873 (Reg. 8410), Samuel married Anna Jane “Jenny” Mitchell who was born Sep 28, 1851 in Chinguacousy Twp, Peel Co. to Robert Mitchell (Sept. 29, 1809 to Apr. 3, 1863) who married Ann Fleming (nee Forbes) in 1836. The Wesleyan Methodist ceremony was performed by Rev. James Matheson and the witnesses were John F. Mitchell of Chinguacousy and Anne M. Mitchell of Eglinton. The 1901 Census had Anna born on Sept. 28, 1852. Samuel was of Minto Twp., Wellington County.

On Aug. 24, 1874 (1901 Census), Robert Jarvis born in Minto Twp., Wellington County. On Feb. 14, 1900, he married Anne M. Edmunds in Harriston. The 1901 Census, Wellington North, recorded them as Robert J, 26, Methodist, dry good merchant, Annie M W, born Sep 3, 1875, 25, English, living in an 8-room brick house on Lot 26 of Elora Street, Harriston Town, Wellington Co. On Nov. 17, 1901 (Reg. 43927), Norma Edmunds was born in Harriston. On Mar. 19, 1906 (Reg. 47600), Gurtrude Roberta was born in Harriston. On April 7, 1908 (Reg. 52773), Samuel Creighton was born in Harriston. Robert was recorded as a merchant on each of the children’s birth registrations and the physician was Dr. Henry. The 1911 Census, Wellington North, recorded Robert J. Henry, 36, Annie M.W., 35, Norma P., 10, Gertrude R., 7, and Samuel C., 3, all born in Ontario.

On Apr. 1, 1876, Charles Richmond (Reg. 34328) was born in Minto Twp. He was delivered by Dr. S. Henry.

On June 6, 1878 (Reg. 34089), Thomas Richmond was born in Harriston and was delivered by his father. In 1904, Thomas graduated from the University of Toronto as a physician and surgeon. He practiced in Burgessville before join his father’s practice in Harriston. On Oct. 18, 1905 (Reg. 3382), he married Jessie Emma McCormack. Thomas was 27, Methodist, and a resident of Harriston. Jessie was 27, born in Toronto, of Orangeville, Presbyterian, and the daughter of Samuel Shaw McCormack and Emma Hughson. The witnesses were R. and Jean Bethune of Toronto. On Nov. 12, 1911, a still born son was born in Harriston. Thomas was the physician. Thomas later married Jean Kirkpatrick. Thomas’ son was Herbert C. In 1922, at the time of his father’s death, Thomas was practicing medicine in Norwich. He took over his father’s practice for a short while before moving to Oakville and later Norwich. He did postgraduate work in surgery in Detroit and the joined a partnership in Woodstock for 40 years. He retired there, after almost 60 years of practice. On Sept. 3, 1968, Thomas died at 90 in his home in Gravenhurst, Muskoka District. He was survived by his wife, son, 4 grandchildren, and 5 great granchildren.

On Sept. 22, 1880 (Reg. 36471), Maude Victoria was born in Harriston. She was delivered by her father. The 1901 Census had her born on Sept. 22, 1881. She married Fred Speight.

The 1881 Census, Harriston Village, Minto Twp., Wellington County, recorded Samuel Henry, 32, a doctor, Anne, 29, Robert, 6, Charles, 5, Thomas, 3, and Maud Vic., 7 months. They were all born in Ontario and all Canadian Methodists.

On Mar. 4, 1883, Herbert was born in Harriston. On Mar. 30, 1883 (Reg. 17547), he died in Harriston of cholera which he had had for 3 weeks. His father and Dr. J. Allan were the physicians.

On Aug. 6, 1884 (Reg. 37499), Clarence Norman was born in Harriston. He was delivered by his father. The 1901 Census recorded him as Norman C. born on Aug. 8, 1885. On June 15, 1910 (Reg. 12692), he married Hazel Jean Roberts in Seaforth, Huron County. Clarence was 25, a banker, Anglican, and of Seaforth. Jean was 20, Anglican, of Seaforth, and the daughter of Captain John Sidney Roberts and Frances J. Porter. The witnesses were Kathleen G. and Frances J. Roberts. The service was performed by Rev. John Berry. On May 22, 1911 (Reg. 24867), Thomas Jack was born of Victoria Street in Seaforth. His father was a banker. Dr. John McGinnis was the physician. The 1911 Census, Seaforth, Huron County, recorded Norman Henry, 26, a banker with the Dominion Bank, Hazel, 21, born July, 1889, and Thomas J., 11 months, all born in Ontario and Anglican. In 1943, Hazel died in York County. On Dec. 13, 1944, Clarence entered the U.S. at Buffalo. He was 60 years old and a civil servant of Toronto. He was visiting Dr. Kathleen J. Dunning in Scarsdale, New York. He was 6 foot, had fair hair, and blue eyes.

On June 19, 1886 (Reg. 3909), Cora Mitchell was born in Harriston. She was delivered by her father. On Aug. 19, 1886, she died.

On Aug. 25, 1888 (Reg. 37701), Laura Mitchell was born in Harriston. She was delivered by her father. On Sept. 20, 1889 (Reg. 19274), she died in Harriston.

The 1891 Census, Harriston, recorded the family in Harriston.

On July 26, 1893 (Reg. 36277), Roy Ewart Gladstone was born in Harriston. He was delivered by Dr. Henry. On Sept. 28, 1918, Corporal Roy Henry of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry was killed during an attack near Sailly, France. He was buried in Tilloy, southwest of Denain, France. His ID number was 487345.

The 1901 Census for Harriston Town, Wellington County, recorded the family as S.M. Henry, 52, physician, Anna J., 48, Thomas R., 22, student, Maude V., 20, born 1881, Norman C., 16, born 1885, Roy G., 7, and Annie Grice, 25, born Sept. 3, 1875, a domestic. The family was Methodist and lived in a 14-room wood house on 3/4 acres at 12 Elora St. N.

The 1911 Census, Harriston, recorded Samuel M. Henry, 62, a physician, Annie Jane, 58, Maud Henry, 29, and Annie Grice their domestic. The family were all born in Ontario and Methodist.

In 1916, Samuel moved his practice to Toronto, according to his obituary in the Canadian Practitioner and Review, Volume 47, 1922.

On Oct. 8, 1922 (Reg. 95660), Samuel died at 74 of carcinoma of sigmoid in Toronto General Hospital. Samuel had practiced for 43 years in Harriston where he had been Mayor and Chairman of the Board of Education. Ann Jane Henry of 138 Howard Park Avenue was the informant. The funeral service was held in his home and he was buried in Harriston Cemetery.

The Canadian Practitioner and Review, Volume 47, reported Samuel’s death. He had lived at 138 Howard Park Avenue in Toronto.
