Lula was born in 1876 in Lamar, Texas. Her name is variously typed as Lulu or Lula, but her brother always referred to her as Lula. Her middle name is variously spelled Pernelia, Penelia, or Parmelia. She was the daughter of Isaac Rohrer and Anna Henry. After her mother's death and father's remarriage, the family moved to Palmyra, Missouri. According to yellowed clippings in family scrapbooks, "she studied nursing at Blessing hospital in Quincy where she served on the faculty for a number of years after becoming a registered nurse. Later she held the position of superintendent of a hospital at Galesburg, IL. In 1912, she married Thomas Merrick" and they lived in the New York area. After retirement, she returned to MIssouri " to live with her sister, the late Mrs. J. T. Major at the family home in Mt Zion community." One son, Thomas, is mentioned in her obituary as a survivor. She passed away in 1963.
