Biography

Lavina Hensley was born about 1830, in Indiana, to "Edward" and "Nancy Hensly." Lavina died, in Indiana, on January 20, 1873.^[1][2]

Lavina married Abraham VanWinkle circa 1850, and they had at least two sons: James Hiram VanWinkle (1850–1923) and Edward VanWinkle (1851–1901).^[1]

Lavina Van Winkle married Matthias Beard, on February 1, 1857, in Spencer County, Indiana.^[3]

According to the U.S. Census of 1860, "Lavina Beard" was found, at age 30, in Indiana, with "Mathias Beard," age 28. They had the following children: "James H.V. Beard," "Sally A. Beard," "Edward Beard," and "William B. Beard," ages 10, 8, 4, and 1, respectively. All of these people were born in Indiana.^[4]

According to the U.S. Census of 1870, "Lavina Beard," at age 30, was found living with "Mathias Beard," age 37, in Indiana. Also found in their household were "William Beard," "Mary Beard," "Isaac Beard," "Alice E. Beard," "Martha E. Beard," ""James H. Van Winkle," and "Edward Van Winkle," ages 10, 8, 5, 4, 1, 19, and 14, respectively.^[5]

Research notes

There are several discrepancies between the U.S. Censuses of 1860 and 1870:

James H.V. Beard, age 10, seems to have become James Van Winkle, age 19.

Sally A. Beard, age 8, who would have been 18, is missing.

Edward Beard, age 4, seems to have become Edward Van Winkle, age 14.

William B. Beard, age 1, is age 10.

Mary Beard, Isaac Beard, Alice E. Beard, and Martha E. Beard, were born since the Census of 1860.Vaughan-3997 13:01, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
