Franklin[1] (or Francis[2]) was born about 1847 in Pennsylvania.
He was the son of John Henson and Rachel Hill, and the brother of Civil War veteran John Henson of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during that war.
