Biography

David, third son of Samuel Hepworth and Edna Wilder, was born 9 December 1919 in Hammond, Lake County, Indiana.[1][2] His young family included his parents Sam (age 26, farmer) and Edna (23), David Jesse (one month), and his older brothers Samuel "Eugene" (4) and Daniel Ralph (2).[3]

His family was constantly on the move as the 1930 census reveals.[4] At that time they were living in Washington, Morgan County, Indiana. The household included his Michigan-born parents Samuel (age 37, laborer) and Edna (34), David Jesse (10, b. Indiana), and his siblings Samuel "Eugene" (14, b. Michigan), Daniel Ralph (12, b. Michigan), Nola Grace (8, b. Michigan), Mary Omega (7, b. Michigan), Hazel Selina (5, b. Wisconsin), Daisy M. (3, b. Michigan), a two-year-old brother (b. Michigan) and newborn sister (b. Indiana).[4]

Before 1935 he and his parents had moved again to Pentwater, Pentwater Township, Oceana County, Michigan.[5][6] Living together there in 1940 were Samuel (47, laborer) and his wife Edna (43), Hazel (15), and her siblings Nola (18), Mary (17), Daisy (13), a brother (11) and three sisters (ages 10, 6 and 5).[6]

Between 1935 and 1940 David moved out on his own. In 1940 he (age 22) was working as a farmhand for and living with the Harry Rigterink family in Overisel Township, Allegan County, Michigan.[5]

David was still single when he enlisted in the Michigan National Guard on 15 October 1940.[7] His record shows that he had a grammar school education.[7] He was a private in the United States Army during World War II.[2]

Some time after this he married Marguerite Denslow, daughter of Walter Henry Denslow and Cora Sullivan.[8] They, too, had a large family.

David died 22 July 1997 in Rome, Oneida County, New York,[1] and was buried in nearby Lee at Evergreen Cemetery.[2]
