Jost was born in in the German Palatinate, 1699. His last name at birth was not "Harbaugh," it was Herbach. Harbaugh is an anglicized version of the name. He passed away in 1762.
He was perhaps the first to come to America. According to family tradition, he came with his family in 1736. Rev. Henry Harbaugh heard his grandfather say that he came to America when he was six years old, and Jacob was born in 1730. Some descendants reported that Yost came in 1735, but they were unable to authenticate the story. Neither has anyone found an immigration record for Yost Harbaugh. --Harbaugh History, by Cora Bell Harbaugh Cooprider, 1947, p. 14
In the first Warrant he made in 1739, "Jost Herbogh" took out a Warrant (process at the time consisted of a Warrant, then a Survey, then request for a Patent) for one hundred acres in Maxatawny Twp., at that time Philadelphia County, and later Berks County. This farm was midway between Reading and Allentown. This land was then Vacated, no Patent being issued. In his 1856 Annals, Rev. Henry Harbaugh thought that his ancestor came to America in 1736, from Switzerland. There is a record in York Historical Society showing he was born in Kaiserslautern. We had reported to us from Kansas, that Yost went to Switzerland about 1720 and from there to Philadelphia. We have never located an immigration record, nor the name of his father. It may be a coincidence, but we did find another immigrant, John Peter Harbaugh in 1741, and who settled in Berks County, Pa. It was about 1743 that Yost removed to his new settlement at Kreutz Creek, in York County. It was in 1742 that another immigrant Casper Harbaugh came to America, and the deeds show he settled in York County also. John Peter remained in Berks County, Casper went to Somerset County, and Yost died east of York, Pa. Yost was a pious person. He loved the church and brought up his children in it. He helped to found the church at Kreutz Creek, which was near his homestead, an organization which still exists. He was a man of stout physical frame, energetic sprit, and great courage.

-- Yost Harbaugh, the elder, was a Swiss immigrant who first settled in Maxatawny Valley, (now) Berks County, in the year 1736, from whence, about the year 1743, he removed to Hellam Township, on Kreutz Creek, this county, where he became the owner of a tract of nearly 200 acres of land near where Kreutz Creek Church now stands. The land was originally taken up (in 1736) by John Huntzecker, and after passing through various ownerships, became vested in---Stoner, in the possession of whose descendants it still remains.
"We Anabaptist Hubers came from Zürich, and we all fled the canton in the mid-1600s. We came first to the Elsass (Alsace) and later to the Kraichgau in Baden, Germany (the Sinsheim, Heidelberg area) by around 1665. By this time there were NO remaining Anabaptists in Zürich, except a few old ladies that were married to Reformed men. No congregations were left and emigration was totally forbidden and contacts cut off. Hence anyone claiming an Anabaptist background, and who says he or she left Zürich after 1650 is confusing something. Yes, our origin is Zürich, and yes we are of Swiss roots, but we came to America from Germany, not from Switzerland. " (Further reference is given.)
