Biography

•Birth: APR 1699 in Aspach, Kaiserslautern, Germany
•Death: 3 APR 1762 Kruetz Creek, in Hellam Twp., York Co., PA
•Baptism: 21 APR 1699 Aspach, Germany
•Burial: Hellam Township, Adams Co., PA
•Immigration: ABT. 1736 From Germany to US
•Religion: Reformed
•Note:

He was perhaps the first to come to America. According to family tradition, he came with his family in 1736. Rev. Henry Harbaugh heard his grandfather say that he came to America when he was six years old, and Jacob was born in 1730. Some descendants reported that Yost came in 1735, but they were unable to authenticate the story. Neither has anyone found an immigration record for Yost Harbaugh. --Harbaugh History, by Cora Bell Harbaugh Cooprider, 1947, p. 14

In the first Warrant he made in 1739, "Jost Herbogh" took out a Warrant (process at the time consisted of a Warrant, then a Survey, then request for a Patent) for one hundred acres in Maxatawny Twp., at that time Philadelphia County, and later Berks County. This farm was midway between Reading and Allentown. This land was then Vacated, no Patent being issued. In his 1856 Annals, Rev. Henry Harbaugh thought that his ancestor came to America in 1736, from Switzerland. There is a record in York Historical Society showing he was born in Kaiserslautern. We had reported to us from Kansas, that Yost went to Switzerland about 1720 and from there to Philadelphia. We have never located an immigration record, nor the name of his father. It may be a coincidence, but we did find another immigrant, John Peter Harbaugh in 1741, and who settled in Berks County, Pa. It was about 1743 that Yost removed to his new settlement at Kreutz Creek, in York County. It was in 1742 that another immigrant Casper Harbaugh came to America, and the deeds show he settled in York County also. John Peter remained in Berks County, Casper went to Somerset County, and Yost died east of York, Pa. Yost was a pious person. He loved the church and brought up his children in it. He helped to found the church at Kreutz Creek, which was near his homestead, an organization which still exists. He was a man of stout physical frame, energetic sprit, and great courage.

  • Yost Harbaugh, record of whom is found in the land office at Harrisburg, where it is shown that in 1739 Joast (as the name was then spelled) Harbaugh owned a tract of 100 acres of land in what is now Berks county. He is supposed to have come to America in 1736. Cooprider tells that Yost Harbaugh was twice married. Her account gives the same marriages and children as that repeated for the Harbaugh Rootsweb site quoted above.

-- Yost Harbaugh, the elder, was a Swiss immigrant who first settled in Maxatawny Valley, (now) Berks County, in the year 1736, from whence, about the year 1743, he removed to Hellam Township, on Kreutz Creek, this county, where he became the owner of a tract of nearly 200 acres of land near where Kreutz Creek Church now stands. The land was originally taken up (in 1736) by John Huntzecker, and after passing through various ownerships, became vested in---Stoner, in the possession of whose descendants it still remains.

  • The page for Michael Hahn [1] has an interesting notes concerning Harbaugh. But there is also provided, a note by Peter Hoover concerning the Swiss origins:

"We Anabaptist Hubers came from Zürich, and we all fled the canton in the mid-1600s. We came first to the Elsass (Alsace) and later to the Kraichgau in Baden, Germany (the Sinsheim, Heidelberg area) by around 1665. By this time there were NO remaining Anabaptists in Zürich, except a few old ladies that were married to Reformed men. No congregations were left and emigration was totally forbidden and contacts cut off. Hence anyone claiming an Anabaptist background, and who says he or she left Zürich after 1650 is confusing something. Yes, our origin is Zürich, and yes we are of Swiss roots, but we came to America from Germany, not from Switzerland. " (Further reference is given.)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Yost by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Yost:

On Nov. 1, 2018, I visited the original Harbaugh Homestead in Kreutz Creek, Hellam, PA; at which time, I took many pictures. I cross-referenced the pictures with the narrative found in Rev. Henry Harbaugh's "Annals of the Harbaugh Family in America". The document that I created is too large to place on wikitree. It can be found under the name of Jost Harbaugh on Nancy Wiebel's tree which is public on ancestry.com. Or you can leave me a comment with contact info, & I will forward e-copy to you.

Herbach-37 and Harbaugh-389 appear to represent the same person because: Herbach-37 & Harbaugh-389 represent the same person. Refer to Harbaugh history books, as well as Pennsylvania land records from the 1700's. Jost/Yost Herbach/Harbaugh/Harbough is my 5th gr grandfather.

Harbaugh-328 and Herbach-14 appear to represent the same person because: The dates and locations in these two profiles match. It is clear that they describe the same person. I think that Harbaugh is the more accepted spelling because family historians spell it that way. (Son John may need merged as well.

Hi! I couldn't figure out what the correct "colonists" category might be. Check out the options here. See also this G2G question.

If nothing seems right, you might want to post a G2G question asking for help in categorizing him (click the "Ask Question" just above the comments section on the profile - until another comment is posted, it's just above this comment).

Cheers, Liz

Harbaugh-129 and Herbach-14 appear to represent the same person because: They look like they are the same people. Also, they look like the same Yost Herbach/Harbaugh that I have as George Harbaugh's father from "Genealogy of the Harbaugh and Eyler Families" compiled by William K. Harbaugh.
