Priscilla married Henry Brown on 26 November 1689 at Cayton, near Scarborough, Yorkshire.[2] Bishop's transcripts also show the marriage place as Seamer, an adjoining parish.[3] Priscilla is named on the baptisms of their children, who also have records in Seamer and Cayton.[4]
Priscilla died in 1731 and was buried on 5 July 1731 at Cayton, Priscilla wife of Henry Brown.[5]
Research Notes
No source found for Priscilla's parentage at the moment. There was a Herbert family living in Seamer and having children around the time Priscilla was born - Robert Herbert and his wife Margaret had a son Robert baptised there 6 October 1667.[6] There is a Priscilla Harbert daughter of Robert born at Speeton, about 9 miles away, on 10 January 1654/1655[7] but she would probably be a little too old for this marriage (there are children up to about 1704). She may be the Priscilla Herbert daughter of Robert who died in childhood and was buried at Muston 20 April 1658.
"They had several children but all died young, except a daughter named Margaret, afterwards the wife of Lionel Maddison, of Saltwellside, in the county of Durham, esquire. The mother died at York, in childbirth, and was buried with her unbaptized infant in St Saviour's church, on the 19th of July, 1670." This supports Dugdale's pedigree above.
An online search revealed hundreds of trees that all have Sir Henry Herbert and Anne Harrison as the parents of Priscilla Herbert but none have a reliable source attached to support this connection. The only sources used at these sites to substantiate the lineage are: another Ancestry tree (Source: unreliable), a Family Search tree with no relevant sources attached (Source: unreliable), and a Millenium File at Ancestry (Source: unreliable).
Further analysis of the Millenium File may explain where the initial problem has arisen.[8] The details of this source are:
Name: Priscilla Herbert
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 1664
Birth Place: Clayton, York, England
Death Date: abt 1731
Burial Date: 3 Jul 1731
Burial Place: Clayton, York, England
Spouse: Henry Brown
Children: Richard Brown
The source does not record the parents but names the birth place as Clayton. Clayton seems to have been exchanged for Cayton or is a typo/transcription error. Cayton is an ancestral home of one branch of the Harrison family that Anne Harrison descends from but it is not her line, she is from the Allerthorpe branch. Her husband's estate was at Middleton Quernhow in the parish of Wath in Yorkshire, which is quite a distance from Cayton/Seamer. Millenium Files are sourced from user databases so it is unknown where the information originally came from and if it was credibly sourced, so is considered unreliable.
I have added some new sourced Research Notes that explain why I believe that Priscilla Herbert is not the daughter of Sir Henry Herbert and Anne Harrison and should be detached from them.
Edited to add: What source shows her parentage? She is not listed as Henry's daughter in Dugdale's Visitation of Yorkshire
