Biography

Lt.-Gen. Sir Edwin Otway Herbert was born on 19 November 1901 at Englewood, New Jersey, U.S.A. He was the son of Gustavus Otway Herbert and Alice McLanaghan.

He was educated at Felstead Grammar School, Essex, England. He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, London, England. He was commissioned in 1921 with the rank of officer, in the service of the Royal Artillery.

He married Muriel Irlam Barlow, daughter of Alfred Irlam Barlow, on 19 November 1925.

He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches four times. He was awarded the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1940 and bar (1943.) He was awarded the U.S. Legion of Merit. He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1946. He was GOC of the British Troops, Berlin between 1947 and 1949. He was GOC-in-C of the West Africa between 1953 and 1956. He was awarded the Commander, Order of Leopold II of Belgium. He was awarded the Knight Commander, Order of Orange Nassau. He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) in 1955. He was GOC-in-C of the Western Command between 1957 and 1960.

He lived in 1976 at Llanidan House, Brynsiencyn, Anglesey, Wales.

He died on 4 April 1984 at age 82 at Glyndwr, Clwyd, Wales.
