Biography

Hanna was baptised on 23 April 1828 in Herefordshire, England with her father, Danill Herbert, and her mother, Elizabeth Herbert, present.[1]

On 15 May 1845, Hannah married John Hankins.[2] Their marriage was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1845 in the Hereford district.[3]

In the 1861 England and Wales census, Hannah (age 32) was the wife of John Hanking in Lugwardine, Herefordshire, England.[4]

The couple, along with their children, emigrated to New Zealand aboard the vessel "Canterbury". The "Canterbury" sailed from London on 21 September 1863 and arrived into Lyttelton on 10 January 1864. The passenger list records her husband, John, as a "veterinary surgeon", from "Herefordshire", aged 41 and Maria, aged 36. Children: John (aged 17), Annie M. (aged 16), Ada Elizabeth (aged 14), Amy Mary (aged 13), Alice H. (aged 11), Agnes H. (aged 9), Richard H. (aged 8), Adele E. (aged 6), William H. (aged 3) and Edward H. (aged 1).

Local newspapers of the day record the fact that her husband, John, established a veterinary office in Montreal Street, Christchurch, but later moved to Kilmore Street and finally, Peterborough Street, Christchurch. In 1868, John declared himself insolvent.

She passed away about 1873, aged 44.
