Gerard Herckenrath is a part of US Black heritage.

Gerard Leon was born in 1831. He is the son of Leonardus Joannes Herckenrath and Juliette McCormick. He married for the first time on 02-10-1856[1] Cornelia Geertruda Joanna Brouwer Ancher. He married for the second time on 19-01-1882 Henriette Rosalie Brouwer Ancher.

The story has been told more fully in a new (Dutch language) book by Annejet van der Zijl, called "Fortuna's Kinderen", with full documentation, Amsterdam 2021. The English translation is apparently not yet published.
