Arthur was born in 1883, son of William James Herder and Elizabeth Barnes.

Arthur married Madge of Lynwood, Ayrshire, Scotland.

Arthur, a married Barrister from St. John's, Newfoundland aged 31, enlisted with the British Army on 29 December 1914 and served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 1st Battalion, Royal Newfoundland Regiment, Service Number 1863. Described as 5' 8" with fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. [1] [2]

He Died of Wounds in 1917, aged 32 and was buried at the Tincourt New British Cemetery, France. [3] [4] [5][6][7]
