Newton was born in 1856. He was the son of Joseph Heritage and Anna Dewees. He worked in his father's carriage shop and as a grocer. Newton died in Philadelphia, of typhoid fever, on 30 March 1884. He is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, along with his parents and sisters Lizzie and Mary.
