Biography

Arthur William Herling was born on 3 October 1904 in Eagle, Todd County, Minnesota. He was the son of Frank Herling and Inez Hyllegren.[1]

Military Service

Arthur Herling is a Military Veteran.
Served in the United States Navy 1924-1928

Arthur was a seaman in the United States Navy. His last rank and job description was "Fireman First Class." A fireman worked in the engine room. The name "fireman" came in the days of steam ships: the firemen kept the boiler fires going. He became ill with tuberculosis while serving and eventually died from his illness.[2]

Illness and debilitation

Arthur contracted tuberculosis while on board a US Navy warship. He was treated in Los Angeles but eventually succumbed to the illness and died about three years later. While he was being treated in Los Angeles, his sister Lily came to nurse him. While there, she met a Norwegian man and eventually married him and migrated to Norway where a branch of this family now lives.[5]

Death and burial

Arthur died on 23 February 1931. He was buried in Los Angeles National Cemetery, California.[6][7]
