Biography

Anne was born on 9 July 1908 in Brainerd, Crow Wing County Minnesota. Here parents were Herman John Heman and Elizabeth Hansman.[1] Note: The original birth record did not record a name for Anne. It was amended on 1 May 1944 to show her name as Anna Dorothy Herman by her mother Elizabeth Herman. At the time, Elizabeth was living in the Duluth Hotel in St. Paul, Minnesota.[2]

Her family lived in Brainerd. [3][4]

She married Clarence Fretheim (1908-1974) on 13 Oct 1928.

They had children Richard (3 Nov 1929 - ), Dianne (1935), Neal (25 Sep 1937 - 26 Nov 2005)[5], Karen (1940 - ) and Scott ()

In the 1930 Census, Clarence, Anna, and son Richard were living in St. Paul in the same house at 958 Suburban St. as her parents Herman and Elizabeth Herman, His aunt Edna and her husband Francis Sweeney with their daughter Margaret, and his her grandfather John Hansman. At that time Clarence was working as a machinist for a Hoist and Derrick Manufacturer. [6]

In 1931 & 1932 she was a cashier at Macy's.[7][8] On 11 Aug 1932 the Plentywood Herald reporter from Wolf Creek noted: "Clarence Fretheim's from St. Paul have been visiting a few days with his parents and sisters." [9]

The Producers News another Plentywood paper noted on 27 Mar 1936 - Clarence Fretheim Joins Plentywood Produce Co.

"Clarence Fretheim of St. Paul, who is now connected with the Dore and Redpath, wholesale fruit and vegetable concern, will move to Plentywood during the first week in April and will join his parents at the Plentywood Produce, who in the near future will add a cream station and egg testing and grading room. Their building will be remodeled to comply with the sanitary requirements." [10]

As a produce company, Clarence made many trips to pick up produce, such as this one on 8 Oct 1936 - "Clarence Fretheim left Monday morning for Spokane for a load of fruit and vegetables." [11]

On 21 Apr 1944, Clarence was drafted and enlisted for service in World War II. [12] Due to his age and family at home, he was not sent overseas, but did duty stateside until he was released from service. He was discharged from service on 7 Jun 1945 at the rank of Corporal.

After he returned he took over the business. He sold the building and bought the original Sheraton Memorial hospital. The lower section became the new store. The business was there until it closed in Nov 1967.[13] The store was a fun place for young children. There was a sloping ramp to the store floor and we liked to take the carts down it. Which is probably why we didn't get to go very often. After the store was sold, the shelving and refrigerators stood in the yard of the old house for several years. The house was at the edge of town, close enough to the reservoir to walk up and do some fishing.

Clarence passed away on 16 Jul 1974 at Sheridan Memorial Hospital, Plentywood, Montana. He was buried in the Plentywood Cemetery.[14][15][16]

She passed away on 3 June 1976 in Great Falls, Montana. [17] She was buried in Plentywood.
