William was born about 1738. He was the son of William Herndon and Sarah Poe. Another (merged) record has him with same parents but different birth year: "William was born in 1745. He passed away in 1828. "
William married Frances White about 1758 and together they had fourteen children.
Research Notes
William Herndon (this one) supplied American troops with beef during the Revolution. For this, he is recognized as a Patriot in NSSAR -- SAR Patriot Index Edition III (CD: PP2210, Progeny Publ., 2002) plus data to 2004. NSSAR #134804.[1]
They have Frances White and fourteen children, then also Marry Bohannon with eleven children listed. Though if William passed away in 1785 he may not have been the same William who was having children with Mary Bohannon between 1769 and 1795.
More research needed to verify the correct parent/children relationships.
Also we need to find some sources, Family Search list four sources but they are just links to Ancestry.com.
The Descendants of Wm and Sarah (Poe) Herndon by Ruth Herndon Shield. Wm Herndon the grandson of James and Mary (Elliot-Geroge) and the son of Wm and Sarah Poe Herndon was born abt 1738 in Caroline County, Virginia. Said Wm was an executor of his father's will, proved 4 December 1773 by oath of Robert Farish and Edmund West two witnesses. Wm and brother James qualified as executors with Josiah Samuel on their bond.
The death record for Wesley Herndon indicated father Wm Herndon and mother Mary Herndon.
Three pages from the source record Virginia, U.S., Wills and Probate Records, 1652-1900 Orange Will Books, Vol 7-8 have been added to this profile's source section. They pertain to a William Herndon that could possibly be this profile individual, but died in Orange County, Virginia rather than Green County, Kentucky. It will take more research to prove this change in this profile. This Wm Herndon evidently died without a will. None of the detail in the inventory provides any connection to this profiled Wm Herndon. Said Wm Herndon's estate amounted to $1132. A James Herndon was the administrator of the Wm Herndon inventory done 15 November 1828 in Orange Co., VA and therefore this James cannot be the profile Herndon-603.
Warrosquyoake County Virginia records were transferred to the renamed Isle of Wight county in 1637. The 1745 birth of Wm Herndon therefore has to have been in the Isle of Wight. Information from the Red Book.
The seven siblings of Wm Herndon posted to this profile were all born between 1731 and 1742, three born in Caroline County, VA, three in King and Queen County, VA and one just noted as born in Virginia. Caroline and King and Queen counties abut each other, but Isle of Wight is many miles to the southeast and not a logical birth location for this Wm Herndon's profile. Said William is supposedly born last in 1745 but still not a logical location based on the lives of Wm Pendleton and Sarah Poe Herndon.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
John, I was primarily interested in determining my relationship to Abraham Lincoln's law partner, William H. Herndon, and it appears that we are 4th cousins, 4 times removed. If the merge sheds new light on this relationship, I'm all for it.
Richard, look at Herndon 1064. That appears to have some relation to your William Herndon profile. Looks like we Herndon descendants have a great deal of work to get this right. Many William Pendleton Herndon profiles also. How to proceed?
Herndon-2030 and Herndon-1681 appear to represent the same person because: Herndon-1681is the earliest and closest to my family history research and sources. Herndon-2030 has matching spouse and a couple of children that match my family history for Wm Herndon but the place of birth and date of birth is off, plus the place and date of death is off. But on the basis of the marriage to Mary Bohannon and the two children I propose a merge.
Herndon-2030 and Herndon-1064 appear to represent the same person because: William Herndon is my 4th great grandfather, married to Mary Bohannon. I have records and source to post to the eventual merge. Wm Herndon had twelve children among those are my third great grandfather Thomas James Herndon. Also Archer Gray Herndon the father of Wm Herndon, the law partner of President Lincoln.
