William left Ireland with his family in 1847, and performed with them as a child in the US, Canada, and the West Indies. However, he wasn't into performing and wasn't very good at it.
His brother-in-law William Rahe got him a mercantile position in Havana, Cuba, where he worked until he returned to Canada in about 1872. After 1872 he joined the civil service in Canada.
He married Emily Mackenzie Brown on October 12, 1881 and they had four children in total, including Victor and Winnifred. Winnifred married a Dr. Weatherby of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. His wife Emily died sometime before he did.
