Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Anthony Herring was a Virginia colonist.

Anthony Herring, born between 1637 and 1648 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.[1] He married Rebecca West circa 1677 in Isle of Wight; among their children were:[2]

  1. John Herring Sr, born circa 1680, died 1750, Johnston County, North Carolina; married Catherine O Marbe, daughter of George & Catherine Marbe or Morbe[1][2][3]
  2. Samuel Herring, born circa 1682, Isle of Wight, Virginia[3] married Anne Williams (1690-1769), and died in 1750[1]
  3. Joseph Herring, born circa 1688; died after 1760, Chowan County, North Carolina; wife unknown;
  4. Thomas Herring, born circa 1684; died North Carolina; wife unknown[2][3]
  5. Abraham Herring, born circa 1686, Isle of Wight, Virginia
  6. Edward Herring, born circa 1693, Isle of Wight; died 1767, Johnston County, North Carolina[2][3]
  7. Daniel Herring, born circa 1696; died Sep 1785, Isle of Wight: wife unknown[2][3]
  8. Anthony Herring Jr, born circa 1697; died circa 1760, Johnston County, North Carolina; married 1724 Bridget Joyner[2][3]

From John's (Herring) will and other land records, we believe that John & Marjorie had a son named Anthony. It is possible, however, that Anthony was a son of an earlier marriage of John Herring; however, that is speculative, as no record has been found of an earlier marriage.[2]

On 28 April 1694 Anthony of Lower Parish of Isle of Wight paid 2,500 pounds of tobacco to William West and wife Rebecca for 200 acres on Blackwater River land in Lower Parish adjacent to John Smith and Will Westwray.[4] Isle of Wight County Quit Rent (yearly property tax) Roll of 1714 list Anthony paying tax on 200 acres. Anthony died sometime after that, as it is the last record of him. He did not leave a will. One deed cites some family relationships and others suggest it. There were several males in the family and not enough land to go around so John and Samuel left for Chowan County, North Carolina. His son Anthony remained in Isle of Wright for close to 20 years after his brothers went to North Carolina but in this time left links to brothers Abraham and Daniel and then moving to North Carolina with John and Samuel. These brothers as records show, clustered together, moved together, signed documents together.[3]

Anthony Herring was listed in the1769 Tax List - Dobbs County, North Carolina.[3]
