December 2023 Update

  • I have just found Henry’s son - William Harman’s - 1877 WILL. It had a couple of surprises in it. Two of William’s daughters we had hooked to the wrong parents. I have corrected them here on WikiTree but Ancestry is another thing.
    • Ann Harman b1819 md Peter Fleury (had Adam as her father)
    • Lavina Harman b1828 md John Stooks (had James as her father)
    • (still working on), but looks like Electa Edwards might be a stepdaughter. He names her but not as one of his children, but with two other stepdaughters.

NOTE

  • Some trees online have a Casper Hermann as the father to our Henry. Without a reliable source we have refused to add him here. And also of note is that not one of Henry's numerous sons or grandsons have been called Casper.
  • (February 2019) Y-DNA results back for a descendant of Henry's Bob Harman.(Huge Thank you!!) (Haplogroup I-M223) Would help if we could have a 2nd Harman male, descendant of Henry Harman's, take the Y-DNA test - maybe at the Big Y-700 level. Bob’s results show no direct male line relation to Michael Hermann born 1643 in Schweintz, Saxe, Prussia. A name of interest because he has shown up in quite a few of the trees belonging to some of our DNA Matches.

Henry's Name

  • Although most Canadian documents of that time refer to him as “Henry Harman”, it is evident that his name was originally “Henrik/Heinrich”, ”Herrman/Hermann” or some combination of the two.
  • Most documentation on Henry gives his first name as simply Henrich, Heinrich or Henry. We have two sources where two given names were used: Henry Ludwig and Johannes Henrich. I do not know which is correct, however I can supply a little insight into the circumstances surrounding the creation and possible reliability of the two sources.
    • A granddaughter, in the 1860s wrote that Henry’s name was Henry Ludwig Herrman later commonly known as Harman. This was written in a book we call “Anna Roger’s Birthday Book,” (fly leaf & other blank pages of a text book published in 1850). She was writing about family and would have had family resources to draw upon for her information however she never knew her grandfather, and was writing forty years after his death. A typed copy of this information was sent to me in the late 1980’s. I have never seen the original and have no knowledge of its current whereabouts.
    • A church baptism, likely recorded the day of the event, says the father's name was Johannes Hinrich Hermann – likely a more reliable document. Except the Hermann family were not regular parishioners of that church, possibly even completely unknown to the pastor, and a lot of people that day had Johannes in their name, so was his added by mistake?
    • Conclusion: Ludwig or Johannes? I am more in favour of the "Johannes" name for the simple reason that Johannes/John was a fairly common given name amongst Henry's descendants. But Henry has a son Henry Ludwig Harman and a grandson and some great grandsons named Lewis.

The Story of Henry's Life

  • We know that Henry came to North America as a soldier with the “Hessian Mercenaries” and that at the end of the conflict known as the American Revolution, he did not return to Europe. There were at least three men with the name “Heinrich Hermann” amongst the nearly 30,000 Hessian soldiers who came in aid of the British circa1776. All three were born c1754-56, two served in “von Minnigerode Grenadier Battalion”, one of whom may have been taken prisoner. The third man served as a private in Von Stein’s Garrison Regiment and deserted to the enemy in 1783.
  • How Henry came to remain in America, and if his future wife Esther had anything to do with that decision remains unknown. We do not know Esther’s maiden name. We do not know where Henrik Hermann and his family lived for the 13 years following the war although we speculate it was Pennsylvania. America’s first federal census of 1790 has not answered that question.
  • There is a Hendrich Herman in 1790 Germantown, Columbia, New York. He has the correct number of children (1 male and 1 female) - so this is a possibility. And Germantown is about 40 miles south-east of Berne, Albany where we know they were in 1796.
    • 1790 US Census Germantown, Columbia, New York
      • Name: Hendrich Herman
        • Males - 16 and over: 2
        • Males - Under 16: 1
        • Females: 2
        • Total: 5
    • EXCEPT there is a Henrich Heermans and Catharina Bitzer having three children in the Dutch Reformed Church, Germantown, Columbia, New York from 1787 -1795. See Henrich Heermans
  • After 30 years of non-productive research on this problem, we had a break-through. The baptism of one of the Hermann children was found in Berne, Albany County, New York dated May of 1796. But it doesn't appear that Berne had been the Hermann place of residence. The six older children are not recorded as being christened there although the church had already been in existence for several years. St Paul's Lutheran Church
  • Our Canadian documented knowledge of Henrik Hermann begins in 1796 when he & his family arrived at Niagara Falls in Canada.
  • On the 29th September 1796 at Niagara, Henry petitioned the Crown for 300 acres of land because he…..
    • “.. had served his Majesty as a Soldier under Gen’l Kniphausen – that your Petitioner has a wife and seven children and never received any land prays your Honour would be pleased to grant him 300 acres.”
    • There was no signature but there is what could be a thumb print in the lower right hand corner of the document. The petition was duly read by Council and on the 8th of October the following entry was made in the Crown Land Book – “Henry Harman, stating that he served as a soldier under General Kniphausen, that he has a wife and seven children, and never received any land, praying for 300 acres. Ordered 200 acres if none granted before – proof wanting to confirm title to more.”
  • and From the Upper Canada Land Patentee Records –
    • “Henry Harman – (was granted land at) – Yonge Street – (on) 1796-10-8 – FG (Free Grant)”
    • The land was situated 20-30 miles north of York on the newly opened “Yonge Street” - Lot 77 of the 1st Concession of King Township. Today that land is part of the town of Aurora, just north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He received the title to his land in 1802.
  • On 17th June, 1800 at Niagara, Henry Herman purchased an additional 200 acres - Lot #76, 1st Concession, King Township, from Alexander and Mary Gardner, for the sum of £20. This was officially registered in the king registry of deeds on July 30.
  • In 1815 Henry Herrman, purchased more land, Lot #71 of the 1st Concession, King Twp, 210 acres for £50. His son Adam Hermann was a witness to the deed.
  • King Township held yearly meetings, the minutes of which have survived. The earliest of these records, dated 18 March 1809, tells us that Henry was appointed “pathmaster” for the coming year. His duty was to ensure that all settlers did the road work required on road allowances on which their property fronted. In the same records the clerk commenced a roll call of the inhabitants of the township. This was a yearly listing of the heads of household, including the number of adults and children. In 1809, Henry and Esther are recorded with seven children living with them. Henry is approaching or possibly has already passed his 60th birthday. Esther is in her mid-40s and has just discovered she is pregnant again - this is her 12th child. Her oldest daughter, Mary Agnes, who is married to James Rogers of the nearby Quakers settlement, is also expecting a child this year. Henry and Esther have a house full of strong young boys. The role says there were six males under 16 years and one female under 16.

  • 1795 Mystery
    • Recent Development (2019): a possible 1795 connection being examined, which, IF it is our Henry, would indicate that he left his pregnant wife and children at Berne, Albany County, New York, while he journeyed to Canada to scout for a good location to settle. Hence the delay in having the baby baptized. [I received the following letter on Tue, 19 Feb 2019] rileyduval at sympatico.ca wrote:
    • Hi Marie, Outside of Penetang [Ontario, Canada] there is a stone with this inscription on it: (see attachment)
      • GRIII - Counsil Rock - Givens Lt 2nR (QnR Queens Rangers) - Aiken, SYR (surveyor) - J. Peltier - H. Harman - 11 May 1795 - And three dodems.
    • Givins is James Givins of the Queens Rangers, Aiken is Alexander Aitken deputy surveyor of Upper Canada, J.Peltier is Jacques Peltier, who was an interpreter (contractor) at the time Which leaves H. Harman. Looking through any Harman connected with any of the above gives me Henry Harman, who was under Knipshitz during the rebellion, had an uncle I believe directly under Simcoe, and received land very early on Yonge Street, where Aitken was surveying.
    • If given the opportunity, he probably jumped at the chance to scout Yonge street and beyond, looking to settle somewhere.
    • So from what I have seen Harman could have been available in 1795 to go to Penetang and back with a small group. His abilities as a soldier would be welcomed, and I wonder if, as Jacob Harman was a driver, he may have been available as a driver as well?
    • Do you recognize any of the names above or have any information (even unsubstantiated) that might be worth looking into?
    • I also wonder as the inscription appears to be in one hand, and Givins and Aitken are both misspelt if Harman could have actually been the one inscribing, Do you have any of his writing? Thank you, Art Duval (he wrote the following articles)
