As a young man, Horace helped his mother by working on the Herrmann Farm. Later he worked the coal mines in Gallia, Ohio. He worked the "tipple" , which meant, bringing coal out of the mines, and dumping it into railroad cars and pushing the coal cars out of the mines. Then he worked in Detroit, Michigan for the Ford Company. After this, he would only own Ford cars.
Horace then worked for the State Highway Department of Ohio. He drove one of those huge yellow trucks. Horace became disabled during the course of this job as he had to "crank" the front of the truck to start it, and one day, the entire crank flew out of the truck, hit Horace in the chest, and "he" flew backwards into a building. The workers that witnessed the incident said that they couldn't believe that he was still alive with the force with which he was hit. This injury caused complications that caused him a great deal of pain, but Horace never complained.
Horace was very good looking when he was young. He had many a girl going after him. A particular woman at one of the dances that he attended was very interested in Horace, but she said that he only had eyes for Estella Lambert, (his future wife).
Horace was a great dancer. He loved going to all the square dances and especially could dance a good tango. He was very light and coordinated on his feet. Estella, his to be wife though, was not allowed to attend any of the dances. Her Father, Jasper Lambert, was very protective of her and was afraid that dances would "get her into trouble".
When Estella and Horace were married, they first lived in Gallia County, Ohio. During the Cheshire Flood of 1937, their house was protected because they lived up on a hill. But, Horace Herrmann took his row boat and rowed the neighborhood people up to Pomeroy to get groceries from the town store. The bottom floor of the store was flooded so the groceries were carried up to the top floor by the store owners. Horace rowed the neighbors right up to the top floor window and when the groceries were loaded, he would row the person and their groceries back to their home. Helen (Herrmann) Ennis remembers sitting on the hill of her home and watching many things floating down the road with everyone's chickens floating on top of the furniture and other household items.
Horace had a beautiful garden and would pick black raspberries and strawberries and sell them at the neighborhood store to provide the family with extra income when needed. He also grew potatoes, corn, green beans, and tomatoes. He also raised chickens and sold the eggs at the neighborhood store as well.
Horace was a very bible oriented person. He had the bible practically memorized verse-by-verse. He would listen to his radio bible shows every Sunday when he was older and unable to attend church. He was also a very quiet person. He once told his daughter, Helen, "if you be quiet and listen when people are around, you will learn allot about other people".
Horace was always the playful one when his children were growing up. He taught his children to dance. His wife, Estella (or Stella as she preferred to be called) was the serious one and focused on the more serious issues.
Horace did not go to a physician throughout his lifetime. He said that "doctors kill you". It wasn't until he collapsed on the floor of his home and could not get up that an ambulance was called and he was taken to Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He was diagnosed as having Advanced Bowel Cancer, Diabetes, a mild blood leukemia, Parkinsons Disease, and signs of having had several strokes. He never complained of pain at any time. He died quietly at home with his daughter, Helen by his side, and his wife nearby.
Horace and his wife, Estella are buried at Gravel Hill Cemetery, 1079 Gravel Hill Cemetery, Cheshire, Ohio 45620.
