Biography

md. Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church to Catherine Fulhaven

"Stophel" was born in Germany, the son of George Christoph Herrold, Sr. and Maria Cathrina Scheelkopf. They were from Steinheim an der Murr (a tributary of the Neckar River) Wurttemberg, Germany.
See house where he was born[1]

In 1743 he was 20 years old when he came to America with father and brother, John George. They crossed the Atlantic from Rotterdam via Cowes, England to Philadelphia, aboard the "Rosannah", arriving September 26, 1743.
The names below were listed on ship “Rosannah” in 1743:[2]

Christaf Heralde
Yarah Christal Herald
Johan Earah Herald

Another passenger list shows 2 men not listed together:

Georg Christoph Hoerold, from Steinheim an der Murr, Baden
Jorg Christoff Heroldt

They initially settled in Bethel Twp, Lancaster County, PA.
1744, the year after they arrived, he married Maria Catherina Pontius in Berks Co, PA.
1750 - Christopher moved with his father to Heidelberg Township, Berks Co, Pa. where several of his children were born.

1755 - Christophel was with Gen. Braddock and Washington on their disasterous march to Ft. Duquesne (Pittsburgh) in the French and Indian War.[3]

1770 Stophel went on an "expedition to W. PA with Conrad Weiser and was alloted land in Hempfield Township called "Harroldton....They dedicated 158 acres of land known as 'Good Purpose' which later was the land on which Harrold's Zion Lutheran Church was built, and on which the St. Johns Church is also resident today. George and wife are buried in one of the cemeteries there...." [4]

He had a "Tomahawk Grant" maybe in Westmoreland Co, Pa. A Tomahawk Grant was not a reward for military service, it was merely slashes that a man put on trees surrounding his claim of land before there was a land office. Later when a land office was organized, they usually legalized these slashes, called Tomahawk Grants. Stophel apparently went on an expedition to western Pennsylvania with Conrad Weiser and was alloted land in Hempfield Township called "Harroldton” where he moved his family in 1770. Their settlement in Hempfield was known as the Harrold/Herold Settlement and was made up of mostly German immigrants.[5]
The reference above shows the danger of Indian attacks, the next one tells about one such attack.[6]

He is listed in the DAR Patriot Index as:
"Harrold/Herrold, Christopher Sr, b 10-22-1723, Germany, d ca 4-1-1787 PA, m Catherina Mary X(unknown), CS (civil service) PA"
There is a plaque at his grave[7], placed there by the DAR which says, “Defender of the Frontier” during the Revolutionary War.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Stophel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share DNA with Stophel:
