Biography

Harvey Hersey was born in Calais, Vermont in 1830, the son of Nathaniel Hersey and Asenath Slayton. A member of the Tufts University class of 1857, Harvey Hersey became a Universalist minister. During the Civil War, he served as a Chaplin with the 17th Maine Infantry. After the war, he held ministerial positions in Methuen, Massachusetts, Portland, Maine, Provincetown, Massachusetts, and Watertown, New York. He retired to Barre, Vermont where he served as mayor in 1900 - 1901. Harvey Hersey died in Burlington, Vermont in 1919. Reportedly he is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, New York.
