Biography

Elijah was baptized in Hingham 16 Feb 1752.[1] He is the son of Elijah and Achsah Hersey.[2] He may have been born 9 Feb 1752.[3]

He moved from Hingham to Leicester, Worcester County, Massachusetts.[2]

Elijah was a Revolutionary Patriot and fought in the Revolutionary War.

Elijah married first Beulah Waite on Dec. 31, 1780 in Brookfield, Worcester, Massachusetts,[4] by Rev. Joseph Appleton, their "purpose" [intention] of marriage having been filed in Brookfield on May 6, 1780.[5]

Per the 1790 Census Record, Elijah and Beulah resided first in Leicester; and by the 1800 Census had removed to Brookfield.[6] Their children included:

  1. Achsah
  2. Harvey
  3. Elijah
  4. Nathaniel Stone
  5. Sarah
  6. Heman
  7. Huldah
  8. Thomas

In the 1790 Leicester Census, Elijah's household included a household of 6: 1 male over 16; 3 males under 16; and 2 females.[7] In the 1800 Brookfield Census Record, Elijah Jr.'s household had grown by 4, his household enumerated with 10 members including 1 male over 45 (Elijah); 1 female over 45 (wife Beulah); and 8 children: 1 male under 10; 3 males 10-15; 3 females under 10; and 1 female 16-25.

After Beulah passed away about 1804, Elijah married second Martha "Patty" Brownell on October 24, 1805 in Brimfield, Hampton, Massachusetts,.[8] Children:

  1. Nathan
  2. Martin.

Per the 1840 Census record, Elijah and Martha resided in Spencer, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Elijah's household is recorded as a household of 2: himself with wife Martha, both enumerated as being between the ages of 80-89.[9]

Elijah died in Spencer[2] at the age of 100 years old in 1850 and is buried in Old Spencer Cemetery, Spencer, Worcester, Massachusetts.[10][11] He shares a gravestone/monument with family members including his 2nd wife Martha, who died 10 years later at about the age of 97.[12]
