Biography

Elijah was born in Leicester, Massachusetts on August 11, 1786. He is noted in the Town's registry of births as the son of Elijah Hersey and Beulah (Waite) Hersey.

Elijah married Eleanor "Ellen" Slayton on March 12, 1814 in Calais, Washington, Vermont. Per the 1850 United States Federal Census record for Calais, Vermont, their children included Joseph Grafton (age 32), Edwin Martin (age 16), and Calvin York (age 12).

Elijah lived in Calais, Vermont, where he and Ellen raised their family. Interestingly, Elijah's younger brother, Nathaniel Stone Hersey, married Asenath Slayton, Eleanor's younger sister, also raising their family in Calais, VT.

According to the Calais, Vermont 1850 Census, Elijah is listed as a farmer; however, in his death record, Elijah is noted as being a "physician." It is assumed that Elijah may have retired as a physician at the time of the 1850 Census, since he would have been about 64 years old.

Elijah passed away on November 30, 1854. His death was recorded by the Montpelier, Vermont, City Clerk, Timothy R. Merrill. The death certificate includes verbiage that Elijah was the husband of "Eleanor," and was "born in Leicester, Mass., son of Elijah and Beulah." Elijah is buried at the Green Mountain Cemetery in Montpelier.
