Biography

Came to America in 1882 on 'SS Herman', settling in Chicago, ILL, bring his wife and children. Jacob owned a hotel in Chicago and had his son, Fred work as the manager. Jacob became a citizen in 1891.

In 1900, Jacob and Katie Hertz were living at W Saylor Street in Chicago. Jacob was the proprietor of a hotel. Living at home were children Fred (28), Jennie (30), Julia (22), John (21), Emilia (18) and Wm (15).[1]

In 1910, Jacob and Katherine were retired and living on Ashland Avenue in Chicago. Son William, a clerk at an auction house, was still living at home.[2]

In March, 1921, Jacob applied for a passport for the purposes of a trip to Switzerland, France, England and Chekoslovakia leaving April 2, 1921. He declared he was born in Hungary to Samuel Hertz.[3] He arrived back in New York, from Le Havre, on October 28, 1921.[4]
