Ernest Frederick Herwig was the second husband of Louise Mae Cuny. They married in 1889, but were married for only a couple of years before she passed away in 1901. They had no children.
Born in Haiti, he came to Louisiana with his parents in 1858. He worked for his father who owned a large sailing ship and a sawmill, and imported mahogany wood. Just before the Civil War he opened his own sawmill business in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana. In 1873 he was elected to the Louisiana State Senate and served for four years. He was also the first person to import Jersey cattle into the country, and at the time of his death owned a large stock farm in Roseland, Louisiana.
