Engelberth's surname, originally Hertzog, was anglicized to Hartsock, Hartsook, Hartsough and other spellings. He married twice, first to Christina Spies, and after her death, to Madalena Fox.  His date of birth given here is inferred from a baptismal record stating that he was baptized age 20 years, 4 months on 27 May 1770  From the fact that he married again in about 1786, it is inferred that his first wife died before this time.
