Margaret Hesketh was born on 11 Oct 1807, and christened on 8 Nov 1807 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. She was the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Hesketh. Her father's occupation was recorded as labourer, and the family's address as Eccleston.

Her daughter Ellen Hesketh was born out of wedlock in about 1838 in Eccleston, Lancashire.

By June 6th 1841, Margaret and Ellen were living with her father Henry, her brother James and her sister Alice in Hackley Moss, Eccleston. Her father was an agricultural labourer; her brother was a journeyman watchmaker.

Margaret married Benjamin Denton on 11 May 1845 at Farnworth Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Both were of full age (21 or more) and lived in Prescot, and neither had been married before. Benjamin was a labourer. Their fathers were named as John Denton (labourer) and Henry Hesketh (labourer). The witnesses were Thomas Denton and Ann Denton.

By March 30th 1851, they were living in Eccleston; Benjamin was a mason's labourer.
