Biography

There is confusion over Peter's wife, Elizabeth. Is she Elizabeth Dawson or Elizabeth Lovall? The solution is that there were two Peter Hesses, cousins, born approx. same time in Pennsylvania. One was born 4 Feb 1755 & died 1833 in Virginia, the son of Balzar or Balthasar (1717). The other was born June 1755 & died 1834 in Pennsylvania, the son of Peter (1703). The fathers, Balthasar & Peter, were brothers.

- Peter Hess who was b June 1755 & m. 1st Elizabeth Lovell (Loveall); 2nd Sarah Hayes then died (by Indians) in Pennsylvania is not the subject of this profile[1].

THIS PROFILE Peter Hess b. 4 Feb 1755 who m. Elizabeth Dawson (circa 1778)

- Peter's parents were Balthasar (1770-1800) & Catharine Gognauver (1721-1780)[2]
- Peter served in the military during the Revolutionary War
- Military Prison Guard 1778 in York County, Pennsylvania, Colonial States; served as prison guard under Col. G Pennington. Peter is listed on three different muster rolls relating to Militia of the County of York, PA.[3], a cemetery listing of Revolutionary War veterans[4], and a W.Va. veteran's headstone request (see attached exhibit)[5]
- Circa 1778 marriage to Elizabeth Dawson, dau of John & Charity (Alston) of Northampton, N.C., presumably taking place in Pennsylvania. Date/location of marriage based on Nov 1789 birth of 1st child, Jerimiah, mentioned in Peter's 1827 Will (see Will transcript, below).
- Hess narrative states that after birth of son Abraham (died before Peter's Will) it is likely that all Peter and Elizabeth's children were born in Monongalia, Virginia.
- 1810 census, only one found for Peter (so far) in Monongalia, Virginia [6]. The record shows Males>10 (1) 16-25 (1) 26-44 (2); Females>10 (2) 10-15 (1) 26-44 (1): Dad/Mom, 3 youngsters, 3 grown kids and another adult male.
- In his 1827 Will, found in the Morgantown County Courthouse, Peter Hess names his wife, Elizabeth and his nine children.[7], and transcript Will settlement in Monongalia, West Virginia (see attachment)[8]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Peter by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Peter:
