Johann was born in 1784, the son of Wilhelm Hess and Catharina Godhard. In 1811 he settled north of Waller in Jackson Township on a tract of 240 acres. He was clerk of St. Gabriel's at the time of the consecration service in 1826 by the Bishop H. U. Onderdonk. He later became a member of the Evangelical Church at Waller. He was a Democrat in politics. He gave the land for the Union church, the cemetery, and the schoolhouse at Waller. He and his wife, Hannah Yorks, are buried there. They had children: William Y. Hess married Ellen Robbins; Benjamin Hess married Eliza Richart; John P. Hess married (1) Mary Roberts, (2) Susanna Robbins; Frederick Hess married Susanna Whitmire; Samuel Y. Hess married Louisa Mosteller; Elizabeth Hess married Jacob Keller; Catherine Hess married (1) Samuel Priest, (2) James Yocum; Mary Hess married William E. Roberts; and Sarah Hess married Thomas Cole.
