  • First-hand information. Entered by Ken Hess at registration.

I grew up in Missouri on a farm and learned about hard work and perseverance. I had an older sister and brother. My dad had a 200 acre farm plus he rented several farms too. He was the first one in the area to have a threshing machine and the first one to have a combine. We had a creek winding through our farm so we had a neighbor with a bulldozer come and make a straight line across to reroute the creek to prevent flooding. My brother and I did most of the work when we were still in our teens.

I got married, had 2 children and moved around the country frequently. I did farm work and construction work as well as working as a mechanic. After my divorce I moved from Missouri to El Paso, Texas where I met my second wife. We lived in Texas and then New Mexico for 35 years before moving to Minnesota in 2006. I have been retired since 1993 for health reasons. I had my own construction company licensed to do Building and Electrical work in Texas and in New Mexico for 20 years. I have worked a wide variety of different jobs and lived in a dozen states.

I like genealogy because, not only does it give me an insight in my family history, but it gives me an insight in the history of our country and the countries that my ancestors came from. I have read more history books in the last 5 years then the rest of my life. This gives me background on why my ancestors left their home country and migrated to the US. My son was in the US Army for 20 years and spent much of his time in Germany. He learned German, married a German girl and then they went around to the areas that my Hess ancestors came from and got copies of original records in German and then he and his wife translated them for my sister and me. I have used Ancestry.com and Family Tree extensively. Since I am unable to travel to get records I rely on others who have put records online. I have done indexing for Family Search and Ancestry. I worked with Family Search indexing the 1940 census.

Notes

Note NI1Kenneth was born on the home farm at Jamesport, Missouri. He learned to work at an early age, driving a team of horses by the time he was nine and driving a tractor by the age of 12. He lost an eye in a farm accident in May 1948 which was a life changing event. He wanted to join the Air Force out of high school but couldn't because of the one eye. During high school he worked in the fields before school and after school and long hours during the summer. He graduated from Jamesport High School in 1952 as a Salutorian and attended one year of Jr. College in Trenton, Missouri. He later took one semester of college at Missouri Western College in St. Joseph, Missouri and a few years later, took another year of college at University of Texas at El Paso, Texas. He took flying lessons for 2 years at Cameron and Chillicothe, Missouri in 1952-54. He also owned his own plane for a while in 1954 that he flew out of the pasture on the home farm. His plans to continue college were interrupted by lack of money and need to work on the family farm. He also did custom farming work and helped the neighbors when the busy season was on. He learned to run a bulldozer at age 16 and operated heavy equipment much of his life. He also worked as a mechanic in farm equipment shops and for construction companies as well as being a welder and a truck driver. He worked on farms as a farm hand for several years in Iowa after he married Shirley. In the early 60's he worked in Wyoming as a equipment operator of bulldozers and motor scrapers on soil conservation work and in the oil fields and in strip mining. Then he worked a few years as a tractor and equipment in Gallatin, Missouri. In 1966 the family moved to Tucson Arizona, where he worked as a mechanic and equipment operator. Then the family moved back to Missouri and he worked as an equipment operator and farm equipment mechanic. In 1970 he was in a serious car accident and that pretty much put an end to equipment operation.
He and Shirley raised 2 children. Wayne, the son, joined the Army immediately out of High School and was in the service for 21 yrs. when he retired in Junction City, KS. He and Yvonne raised a daughter, Christine, who now has 2 children. Linda, the daughter, married young, had 2 children and she and her husband lived in St. Joseph, MO. By careful management they started buying old houses and fixing them up for rentals. Both of her children graduated from Benton High School in St. Joseph and Missouri Western College in St. Joseph.
In 1974 after he and Shirley divorced, he moved to El Paso Texas. He worked various construction jobs there until 1976 when he was in a serious auto accident. He met his second wife Chadra (Sandra) in El Paso in 1976. He started his own construction business there in 1977 and later when they moved to NM he took it up again for a number of years. He had a building and electrical remodeling contracting business, doing commercial and residential work. After an another vehicle accident in 1991, he closed his remodeling business in 1993. In 1995 he took classes for computing and over the next few years honed his skills with learning software and hardware. In 1999 he went to work for a masonry contractor as an office manager and went in and fixed many problems that were there plus taking over control of the computer systems there for repair and maintenance. He finally retired from that in 2001, but continued to do consultant work for that company on a limited basis until moving to Minnesota in 2006.
He was in the US Army from April 1956 to August 1956 when he was giving a medical discharge after completing basic training at Ft Chaffee, Arkansas
.
For a few years in El Paso, Texas, he worked with church and community groups doing theater productions. He acted, did lighting and sound and set design
