Here are notes from my database on Joseph Hess:
With his mother and father, he moved to Parkersburg, Iowa in 1866. Not long after they moved to Cedar Falls, IA. They resided there until he was twenty-one years old when they moved to a farm near Storm Lake in Buena Vista County.
Small man, about 5'8", very strict, grey eyes and blonde hair. Always wore a well-trimmed moustache. Was industrious and determined to get along moneywise. Had a quick temper but usually held it in control. Belonged to the Masonic Lodge. Did not belong to any church but was described as a true Christian. Did not smoke or drink. "Anyone needing help that was worthy, he was the first to volunteer." Had 8th grade formal education but was self-educated. "He was as well-educated as most college students are today." Took 2 daily newspapers -. On Public School Board and a bank commissioner. In Missouri, during the winters, brought a private teacher into their home to instruct the older children.
1918 - excursion to So. Tx. with W. E. Stewart Land Co. (Weslaco) by special train from Kansas City. Bought 70 acres at 0 per acre (to pay for the land he traded two pieces of his sister, Margaret's, land. How he had title to that land is unclear). Raised the first broccoli in the Valley. Bought 1/2 lb. of seed for and sold 00 worth of broccoli.
In 1919, built house in Mercedes, Hidalgo Co TX - still standing and picture taken in 2001 - owner unknown

Biography
Joseph A. Hess was born near Lenark, Illinois August 28, 1863. With his mother and father, he moved to Parkersburg, Iowa in 1866. Not long after they moved to Cedar Falls. They resided there until he was twenty-one years old when they moved to a farm near Storm Lake in Buena Vista County. There he met Miss Verdie Warren, and they were married March 20, 1890. Five of their nine children were born here. They are Leona, Edith, Philip, Sarah, and Helen. While Helen was a small baby they moved to a farm near Jamesport, Missouri March 5, 1869, where their other four children were born. They are Libbie, Josie, Martha and Joseph Jr.
His whole life was devoted to providing the comforts for his wife and children. He was always ready to help his neighbors and his friends were many. In 1920 he and his wife with three children, Joe, Martha, and Helen moved to Mercedes, Texas where he resided until his death. He was in ill health for almost three years continually growing weaker until death claimed him. During this time he knew there was no hope for his recovery and he expressed a desire as he could not regain his health he was ready to go. He bore intense suffering without complaint and left a blessing to his beloved wife, children and many friends. Services were conducted by the Masonic Lodge at the home near Mercedes April 3, 1928. Interment was made in the Weslaco Cemetery.
