Biography

Anna Louisa Hesse was born on 27 October 1876 in Germany. Her father was Ernest Hess.[1]

About age five, Anna immigrated with her family to the United States in 1881.[2]

in December 1895, Anna was residing in the neighborhood of Bem, Gasconade County, Missouri.[3]

Anna married Gustave Borlesch on 5 January 1896 in the town of Bem in Gasconade County, Missouri. They were both residents of the county.[4] This was her first marriage and his second. His first wife had died in 1894 and left him with many children. Gustave had John Gustav Barlish, Louise Rena Borlesch, Mary M. Borlesch, William Harrison Barlish, and Amelia Borlesch, with his first wife and Anna became their step-mother. The two boys, John and William, changed the spelling of their surnames to be different than their father's since they had differences with their step-mother.

Anna and Gust had ten children (seven of whom lived to 1933):

  1. Henry G. Borlesch (1897-1981)
  2. Alonzo Borlesch (1901 - 1963)
  3. Lenora Borlesch Binkholder (1902-1993)
  4. Ida Viola Borlesch[5] (1905 - 2001)
  5. Selma Estella Borlesch Redden (1907-2008)
  6. Addie O. Borlesch
  7. Edward Otto Borlesch (1910-1984)
  8. Alice Leona Borlesch Smith (1914-2007)

In June 1900, Gust, Anna, his four children, and their child Henry were residing in Bourbois Township of Gasconade County, Missouri. Gust was a farmer on a farm they owned freely.[2]

In 1910, Annie and Gust were living in Clay Township of Gasconade County, Missouri.[6]

Anna became a naturalized citizen when her husband Gustave naturalized.

In 1920, Annie and Gus were living in Clay Township of Gasconade County, Missouri.[7]

In 1930, Anna and Gustave were living in Bourbois Township of Gasconade County, Missouri.[8]

In 1935, Anna was living in St. Louis, Missouri.[9]

In 1940, Anna was living with her son Edward and his family in Lemay Township of St. Louis County, Missouri.[9]

In 1950, Anna lived with her son Edward and his family in a house on Marmaduke Avenue in St. Louis County, Missouri.[10]

Anna lived in Bland, Gasconade County, for the last five years of her life.[1] She passed away at age 81 due to cardiac arrest from congestive heart failure on 20 April 1958 at her residence in Bland, Gasconade County, Missouri. She was buried on 22 April at the Leduc Methodist Church Cemetery just outside of Owensville in Gasconade County, Missouri.[1] She shares a gravestone with her husband Gustave.[11] His first wife, Sarah, has her stone just to the north of theirs, but the marker is currently missing.

Notes

Her daughter Ida Borlesch told the story that Anna Hesse was from the same town in Germany that Rudolf Hess' family was from. Walther Richard Rudolf Hess' father Fritz was from the town of Hof in Bayern. It is currently unknown where Anna was born in Germany. Ida was also the informant on Anna's death certificate and she did not provide Anna's mother's name or town of birth. Family stories say Anna may have had a brother named Henry.
